Given our current situation, more and more of us are spending more time at home. That means you may not be able (or willing) to make it to the yoga studio to get a session in. But that doesn’t mean you can’t practice yoga at home.
Here are a few of our favorite tips for starting your own at-home yoga practice.
1 - Find a good space to work out.
If your space is big enough and comfortable you’re more likely to enjoy the workout and keep doing it week after week.
2 - Start small.
Resist the urge to overdo it. Start small with 15-20 minutes of activity 3-4 times per week.
3 - Choose activities you like.
Avoid choosing activities just because they’re highly recommended. If you don’t enjoy it you won’t keep doing it so choose something you like.
4 - Learn a few basic poses
There are over 300 yoga positions, but you don’t need to know nearly that many to have a good practice. Focus on a few basic poses and work on getting better at them. Take note of how your body feels over time and the things you’re able to do week after week that you may not have been able to do before.5 - Consider an online class
An online class is a great way to see the poses in action. A trained instructor will be able to give you clear instructions on how to complete the poses so you can avoid injury.6 - Be consistent.
It’s important to show up even when you don’t feel like it. This makes it easier to establish a habit so you don’t have to continue relying on motivation.
